Why study Kangaroo Farts

It may be that the Kangaroo's cleverest trick is to produce environmentally friendly farts.

Dr Athol Klieve has isolated a bacteria from the stomach of kangaroos which prevents the production of methane. If the kangaroo bacteria were added to cattle feed, they could create herds that have a much lower carbon footprint.

Whilst Carbon dioxide produced by living things is the number one greenhouse gas world-wide, Australia's low population means that methane is our number one greenhouse gas.

Flatulent farm animals account for 14% of the greenhouse gas emission in Australia, second only to our coal power stations.
