How can a dentist help you sleep?

Sleep is vital to staying well.

Almost 90% of Australians suffer a sleeping disorder and about 30% suffer a severe sleep disorder that affects their health.

Dr David Stephenson, a smiledentist in
Albany Creek says,

"Since you spend a third of your life asleep, it makes sense to sleep well! Every day, dentists deal with people who clench and grind their teeth at night, and with people who snore and can't breathe properly. Jawjoint problems and airway problems are dentistry.""

That's why Dr Stephenson and his staff at Albany Dental Clinic are now the
North Brisbane and Pine Shire providers for Home Sleep Studies Australia.

Information is gathered about your sleep pattern, breathing, oxygenation and muscle activity. Home Sleep Studies' Chief sleep scientist Chris Bunney and specialist Respiratory and Sleep Physician Dr James Jamieson provide the analysis and medical diagnosis of sleep disorders.

If you suffer from important health issues such as sleep apnoea, migraines, tension headaches, insomnia, vertigo, TMJ dysfunction, fibromyalgia, or chronic fatigue, you would benefit from a sleep study.

Poor sleep is caused by chronic pain, stress, worry and poor breathing. Snoring, clenching and grinding teeth are all symptoms of poor sleep. Poor sleep results in people who wake up tired, often with a dull headache, or stiffneck and back ache. Living with chronic pain and poor sleep causes strain on relationships and ability to cope at work.

Adults with sleep disordered breathing often develop low serotonin in the brain which leads to clinical depression.

Children with sleep disordered breathing often wet the bed, have poor concentration, swing between bouts of low energy and hyperactivity, and generally fail to thrive. They develop behavioural problems and are often misdiagnosed as having Attention Deficit Disorder.

So how can a dentist help you sleep?

It all starts with a sleep study.

Dr David Stephenson is a member of the American Academy of Craniofacial Pain and has a special interets in TMJ ( jaw joint ) dysfunction and sleep disordered breathing. While a lot of dentists are looking for cavities to fill, Dr Stephenson would rather prevent any disease and help people get well and stay healthy.
