Drink Water - Think Better - Drink More Water !

Dehydration triggers short-term memory problems, trouble with basic mathematics and difficulty focusing on computer screens.

Most people know it is important to drink water, but few people actually drink enough. The human body needs at least 2 litres of water a day just to flush away normal waste product of metabolism and basic functions of posture and motion.

Increased exercise or high calorie diet or medications or airconditioned or hot climates further increase the requirement for water.

Every reaction within the body occurs in an aqueous electrolyte solution that requires correct hydration and pH.

A mere drop of 2% in body hydration is enough to trigger decreased mental function. So rather than reaching for a caffeine or sugar hit, the first remedy should be a glass of water.

Even mild dehydration slows down metabolism. The thirst refex is weak and often mistaken for hunger. Reaching for a sugary carbohyrate rich snack actually depletes the body of even more water.

Consumption of soft drink, cordial, coffee, energy drinks and alcohol as water alternatives actually dehydrate the body further and compound the problem.

The instant sugar hit from soft drink, energy drinks and cordial raise blood sugar levels and trigger the pancreas to produce insulin. This stimulates a rollercoaster of blood sugar levels which affects moods, concentration and energy level. Years of on-demand insulin production eventually exhausts the pancreas, triggering adult-onset diabetes.

All soft drinks contain excessive sodium which further dehydrates the body. Cola drinks also contain phosphoric acid which leaches calcium from bones. Osteoporosis is now no longer seen as a disease of the aged. Young adults are now suffering from the crippling effects of this condition.

Cola and Energy drinks also contain 2 espresso cups of coffee worth of caffeine per 250ml. For every cup of coffee, the body needs the same amount of water just to neutralise the dehydration effect of the caffeine. So energy drinks and cola drinks require 2 litres of water for every one litre of caffeinated drink before the body can even begin to hydrate properly.

So in future , when your mind is getting tired- drink some water ! Your health will benefit and your body will rejoice.
