Australians consume almost 44kg of sugar a year.

The Australian Bureau of Statistics reports that the average annual sugar intake per person in Australia is almost 44kg. Sugar is hidden in most processed food as "carbohydrate filler" adding kilojouless but no nutrition.

"Dieticians" are being used to advertise breakfast cereals that contain up to 40% sugar. The " BigFat Lie " continues to pervade the supermarket with foods marketed as low fat, fat-free or lite, but in fact contain a lot of sugar. Sugar is used in processed food as a preservative and flavour enhancer.

Sugar contains no vitamins or minerals, and is only good as a quick energy boost of glucose in the blood. If it is not needed by the body , the excess carbohydrate is stored as fat. Intermittent spikes of glucose in the blood use up valuable Insulin in the pancreas.

Health experts warn that high levels of unused carbohydrate in the form of hidden sugar, place people at risk of diabetes, obesity, and heart disease.
