Thumb sucking and Dummies

The truth about thumbs and dummies or oral pacifiers.
Sucking a thumb or dummy is a normal physiological reflex and is estimated that more than 90% of young children regularly perform a non-functional sucking habit. Many studies have shown that babies begin sucking even during growth in-utero ( before birth ).

While this form of sucking is normal, most paediatric dentists and orthodontists recommend that it is discouraged after the age of 4 years. Forces of suction cause the top back teeth to suck together and narrow the palate and nasal airway. Pulling on the upper front teeth moves them forwards and pushes the lower teeth backwards creating an open bite. The lips and tongue start to push into this gap and prevent normal swallowing.

Thumb and dummy sucking has to stop well before the eruption of permanent teeth at about 5-6 years old. Children who suck a dummy tend to give up the habit earlier than thumbsuckers.

The habit causes a great deal of stress and anxiety for parents. Children tend to get more insecure if constantly nagged, so this is considered counterproductive. Peer pressure at school and positive reward for not sucking works much better. Advice from a dentist is helpful.
